"We look forward to ensuring that the people who make Ithaca special can afford to live in Ithaca.

The need for affordable housing is undeniable," said project architect Molly Chiang, of Vecino. "We are thrilled to have been selected as the preferred developer for the Green Street garage redevelopment. “If you've never been short on rent, it's hard to describe what that does to you and your family."įor that reason, the mayor said he is in favor of the Vecino project, as well as the opportunity in the downtown district for residents on the lower end of the city's economic spectrum. "The largest problem facing our city right now is a lack of affordable housing,” said Mayor Svante Myrick. Labor support was largely thrown behind the Vecino group project, which organizers say has reached out to local labor in advance of a preferred developer being selected, and has expressed their commitment to keeping construction local, a consideration the city named in the initial request for proposal.įollowing nearly an hour of public comments, the IURA board discussed the proposals and shared their thoughts.

The second-floor conference room at City Hall was standing-room only as the community and several representatives from local labor outfits took turns making their voices heard three minutes at a time. The board voted unanimously to select Vecino Group as the preferred developer, triggering a 90-day negotiation period between the firm and the city to hash out the acquisition of land, and a development agreement that would then need to be approved by IURA and the Common Council. The Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency met Thursday morning to finally select a preferred developer for the Green Street parking garage project.
